What is post tensioning?

Post-tensioning is a construction technique to reinforce concrete structures, such as beams and slabs. It involves the application of tension to steel cables or tendons after the concrete has been cast and cured.

The process typically involves placing ducts or sleeves within the concrete formwork before pouring the concrete. High-strength steel cables or tendons are inserted through these ducts. The ends of the tendons are then anchored to the structure using specialized anchorages.

After concrete pouring and hardening, hydraulic jacks apply tension to tendons. This tensioning process helps to compress the concrete and create a pre-stressed state in which the tendons exert a pulling force on the structure. The level of tension applied is calculated based on design requirements and structural analysis.
